Irish Terriers were used as messenger dogs during war times. Irish terriers have a rather wiry red coat. Their average height is 18 inches and their average weight is 26 lbs. The name Terrier is derived from the Latin word "terra" which means earth. Terriers go to earth to catch vermin.
